Mark Erelli & Jerry Miller
April 18, 2004

Our second house concert featured Boston's Mark Erelli and Jerry Miller. Mark was out in support of his fourth album, Hillbilly Pilgrim, which featured Jerry's band, The Spurs. It was also a special night for hosts Greg and Juliet. Greg proposed in front of the unknowing crowd just before Mark, at Greg's request, started the second set with his song "Before I Knew Your Name." Inside of Juliet's ring are inscribed the words "TRUST YOUR CAPE" from Guy Clark's "The Cape."

LISTEN: Mark Erelli from 2006, talking about his latest album, Hope & Other Casualties [ show notes ].

BEFORE I KNEW YOUR NAME
Mark Erelli (from Compass & Companion)

I walked these streets before I knew your name
Now you're by my side and nothing seems the same
Has everything been turned around or am I the one who changed
I walked these streets before I knew your name

I knew this town before I dreamed of you
Back when the whole place only came in shades of blue
Nowadays it seems that dreaming's all I ever do
I knew this town before I dreamed of you

On every street my memories unravel
There's a history down each winding avenue
These days the only roads I seem to travel
Are the ones that always bring me back to you

I walked these streets before I knew your name
Now you're by my side and nothing seems the same
Has everything been turned around or am I the one who changed
I walked these streets before I knew
I walked these streets before I knew your name

THE CAPE
Guy Clark (from Dublin Blues)

Eight years old with flour sack cape
Tied all around his neck
He climbed up on the garage
Figurin' what the heck
He screwed his courage up so tight
The whole thing come unwound
He got a runnin' start and bless his heart
He headed for the ground

Chorus
He's one of those who knows that life
Is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold you breath
Always trust your cape

All grown up with a flour sack cape
Tied all around his dream
He's full of piss and vinegar
He's bustin' at the seams
He licked his finger and checked the wind
It's gonna be do or die
He wasn't scared of nothin', Boys
He was pretty sure he could fly

Chorus

Old and grey with a flour sack cape
Tied all around his head
He's still jumpin' off the garage
And will be till he's dead
All these years the people said
He's actin' like a kid
He did not know he could not fly
So he did

Chorus
