We should have more bluegrass at our house. It always reminds us of hot summers, attending the Strawberry Music Festival near Yosemite, and hearing impromptu jams at every campsite.
That's where we discovered the lead singer for our next concert, Pam Brandon. She was singing on a dusty camp road at midnight with a jug band, belting out jazz standards with a voice that was waking up the campground. In a good way!
Since 1995, her band Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys have been lighting up the stage around the San Francisco Bay Area. While they have a great appreciation for traditional bluegrass music, they don't quite play it straight; they inject a bit of blues, a smidgen of swing, and a whole lot of fun and frenetic energy. (Pam also fronts the legenday Bay Area western swing band, Lost Weekend.)
You can preview all of Belle and her Boy's work on their Music page and at CD Baby. Also check out a bunch of videos of their performances, including one from the Fall 2008 Strawberry Music Festival.
Potluck lunch to start at our house at 12 noon (doors open at 11:30 a.m.). Mention in your RSVP Comment what you'll bring; stick to salads, rice or veggies. We'll grill up chicken and sausages.
Otherwise, bring your own spirits, dessert to share and smiles!
The show will begin earlier than normal, to accomodate Belle and her Boys. Right after lunch!
We will set up our microphone for an interview with Belle and her Boys (and maybe an encore performance!), which we will then upload as a podcast, for everyone to hear.
Don't forget to check out the past shows in Carmel Valley, including Joe Craven, David Ross MacDonald in July, Emory Joseph last May, Chuck Brodsky last January, and in 2009 Keith Greeninger in May, Annabelle Chvostek & Myshkin in June, Beth Wood in July, and Lila Nelson in August, the Rayburn Brothers in September, and Stevie Coyle in December.
